Afia Prempeh: Between Worlds
DM Gallery is pleased to present Between Worlds, a solo exhibition of new works by Afia Prempeh (b. 1986, Kumasi, Ghana). This exhibition brings together a series of recent portraits that reflect Prempeh’s evolving interest in identity, memory, and the stories we carry.
Working in large-scale acrylic and oil, Prempeh builds her compositions with careful attention to detail—layering color, texture, and symbolism to create portraits that are both personal and open-ended. Her subjects are often women portrayed in quiet, reflective moments, surrounded by objects that hint at their professions, ambitions, and inner lives.
Prempeh’s practice bridges visual traditions from Ghana with a contemporary lens shaped by her life in New York. Her work draws from personal experience, cultural heritage, and broader social themes—particularly around womanhood, self-perception, and the spaces we occupy between past and future. Whether referencing an artist’s tools, digital technology, or business attire, her paintings invite viewers to consider how identity is formed across time and context.
Between Worlds marks Prempeh’s first solo presentation with DM Gallery, and reflects her continued exploration of storytelling through portraiture.
